Find Gwinnett County Inmates

The Gwinnett County inmate search tool, run by the Sheriff's Office, is the right place to check current custody at the county jail. A Gwinnett County inmate records search shows whether a person was booked, what charges were filed at intake, the bond amount, and the current housing assignment. Inmate records are not the same as court records. Charges at booking can change quickly after first appearance, plea, or transfer. The Sheriff also handles courthouse security, warrant service, and prisoner transport, and the inmate portal updates as people enter and leave the facility.

Booking, First Appearance, and Bond

An arrest in Gwinnett can be by Gwinnett County Police, a municipal police department, the Sheriff's Office, Georgia State Patrol, or another agency on a warrant or hold. The arresting agency appears on the jail profile, which is useful because the incident report lives at that agency.

At intake, jail staff confirm identity, run for warrants and holds, inventory property, take photos and fingerprints, screen for medical and mental health needs, and assign housing. Booking can take hours during heavy windows. Georgia arrestees usually get a Magistrate first appearance soon after booking. The Magistrate informs the defendant of charges, can address bond when bond is allowed, and may set conditions of release. Serious felonies, probation holds, family violence cases, and out of county warrants can hold up release.

Bond types include cash, surety through a licensed bonding company, property bond where allowed, or release on recognizance at the judge's discretion. A "no bond" entry can mean the judge has not set bond yet or that the charge or hold is not bondable at that stage.

Gwinnett County Jail Facility

The jail and Sheriff functions sit at the Lawrenceville Sheriff and jail complex tied to the county justice campus. Verify the visitor entrance, the inmate mailing address, and the public information line on the Sheriff's website before any visit, because the entrance for visitors is not always the entrance for inmate property pickup or court business.

Gwinnett Jail Visitation, Mail, and Money

Visitation, mail, phone, and commissary policies are controlled by the Sheriff and may use a vendor. Confirm the current schedule and the current vendor with the Sheriff before relying on a posted policy, because vendors and policies change.

TopicCommon Rule
Visitor approvalVisitors may need to register and meet jail approval rules.
IDGovernment photo ID is normally required for adults.
ChildrenMinor visitors usually need an adult and proof of relationship.
Dress codeNo revealing clothing, gang symbols, or disruptive attire.
Video visitationConfirm the vendor, schedule, and rates before visiting.
Attorney visitsHandled separately from social visitation.
LockdownsVisits can be canceled for security, medical, or staffing reasons.

Mail rules often ban cash, stamps, polaroids, staples, perfume, and explicit content. Legal mail should be clearly marked and follows a separate inspection rule. Money deposits may be online, by kiosk, by phone, or through an approved vendor; deposits may pay off jail debts before they reach commissary.

Transfers Out of Gwinnett Custody

A person may leave Gwinnett custody for Georgia DOC, another county jail, federal custody, a treatment facility, or another agency. The Gwinnett roster may show release or transfer while the person remains in custody elsewhere. To find a sentenced state prisoner, search the Georgia Department of Corrections offender locator. To find a federal prisoner, search the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator. To set up custody-change alerts, use VINELink and select Georgia.

"Transferred" should not be read as released. A person sent to Georgia DOC, federal custody, or another county is still in custody at the receiving facility. The full custody record now lives there, not at Gwinnett. For more on release status reading, see the Gwinnett released inmates page.

Contacting a Gwinnett Inmate

Jail phone calls are usually collect, prepaid, or debit-based through a contracted phone vendor. Attorneys should use attorney-access procedures when the call needs to be confidential. Family messages should go through approved mail or vendor channels. Jail staff cannot pass routine messages, and emergency contact may require chaplain or command staff review.

The mailing label needs the inmate's full booked name and booking number. Letters mailed to the wrong address or without a booking number can be returned. Books, magazines, and packages have to come from approved sources where the jail allows them at all.

What an Inmate Search Does Not Show

A jail roster is not a court docket. It does not show the full case file, the indictment, the plea, the trial, or the sentence. It does not prove guilt. A booking is the start of a case, not the end. For the case file, see the Gwinnett County court records page and the criminal records page.

Sensitive items, such as medical needs, protective housing reasons, juvenile records, and sealed warrants, do not appear on the public roster. Search results can lag the live roster by a short time. Calls to the jail line can help confirm urgent items.

Note: A booking record is not the same as a conviction. Charges can be dropped, reduced, or changed as the court case moves forward.

Getting a Loved One Out of the Gwinnett Jail

The first step is to confirm the booking and the bond on the SmartWEB roster. If bond is set, a cash bond can be posted at the jail or a surety bond can be arranged through a licensed Georgia bonding company. Property bonds work where allowed. Some charges, such as family violence offenses, may have a hold or a condition that delays release until a Magistrate addresses the case.

Plan for a wait. Release after bond posting depends on paperwork, property return, and current jail load. Late night bookings can wait for a morning Magistrate session. Family members should ask the jail about pickup location, expected release window, and any safety conditions, such as no-contact orders, that come with the release. Defendants who cannot afford a private attorney can request appointed counsel at first appearance, and the public defender intake will run a financial review at that time.
